Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. While a small child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by the word association. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she concluded that this school wasn't right for her. Ford then applied for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
